December 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of school Medicaid expansion, the federal policy change that allows schools to seek reimbursement for all health services delivered to all students covered by Medicaid, instead of limiting billing to services included in a student’s special education plan.
Over the past decade, more than two dozen states have successfully expanded their school-based Medicaid program, opening the door to greater financial support for school districts in providing essential health services, especially for students who face barriers to care. Now is the time to take stock of the progress made and the work needed to ensure all states and school districts are supported in leveraging federal policy to improve student health equity in the years ahead.
Join HSC on Dec. 10 (3 p.m. ET) to celebrate this milestone and hear from featured speakers, including former Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Deputy Administrator Cindy Mann, who signed the revised policy in 2014. A panel of state experts will discuss the status of school Medicaid expansion today and the necessary work ahead to increase and sustain student access to essential health services (additional speakers to be announced).
