Medicaid Provides More Than $8 Billion Annually to Support School-Based Health Services
March 13, 2026
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) requires states to report annual spending for school-based health services outlined in a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) or an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP). The combined federal and state spending reported in 2024, the most recent year for which data is available, totaled $8 billion.
However, since CMS captures spending only for IEP and IFSP services in this data set, the $8 billion figure is an undercount and does not reflect total Medicaid spending on school health services.
